It’s the question every would-be owner asks: can a gym franchise actually make money?
The short answer is yes, many do. The longer answer is that profitability depends on a handful of things you can plan for, and a few you can’t. Digi’s founder co-owned four Anytime Fitness clubs before starting the agency, so this is written from the owner’s side of the desk.
As always, this is general information, not financial advice. Talk to an accountant and the franchisor before making any decisions.
Marketing is one of the biggest levers on profit, and it’s what we focus on as a digital marketing agency for gyms.
What makes a gym franchise profitable?
A strong location, a strong launch, and the ability to keep net member growth positive month after month while keeping costs under control.
Gyms are a membership business. Once your membership covers your costs, every extra member adds to the bottom line. The faster and more reliably you get there, the better the business looks.
How important is location?
Very. Population, competition, visibility and parking all shape how easy it is to grow.
A great site makes everything easier, including marketing. A tricky site can still work, but it puts more pressure on everything else. Spend time on this decision.
How much does the presale matter?
A lot. The presale sets your starting membership, and a strong start makes the first year far less stressful.
Opening with a full floor gives you cash flow, energy and word of mouth from day one. Opening quiet means playing catch-up for months. That’s why we put so much into presales.

What should we ask before buying a franchise?
Ask about real performance of existing locations, the support you’ll get, the total cost to open and what marketing support looks like locally.
Speak to existing owners, not just the sales team. Ask what they wish they’d known. Ask how long it took them to break even. Their answers are worth more than any brochure.
Franchise clubs that thrived.
Strong launches and steady growth, credit to the owners and teams behind them.
