Service Business Marketing: 10 Ways to Win More Jobs

25 Oct 2026 | By: Aaron Briggs

Picture a burst pipe at 7am. The homeowner grabs their phone, types “emergency plumber near me” and calls the first business that looks legit. If you pick up, you get the job. If it rings out, they try the next number. That’s it. That’s the whole game.

Service businesses don’t win on clever slogans. They win by being found at the right moment, looking trustworthy when someone checks them out, and answering faster than the competition. Everything below is built around that.

01 · Strategy

Own your local search

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees, before your website and before your ads. Treat it like your shopfront, because for many trades it is the only one you’ve got.

  • Pick the right primary category and add the services you actually want more of.
  • Set your service areas properly so you show up in the suburbs you work in.
  • Keep hours, phone number and booking link current. Wrong details cost you calls.
  • Upload fresh photos of real jobs regularly, not one batch from three years ago.

Pair that with local SEO on your website: a page for each core service, clear suburb mentions, and content that answers what people really search. Good SEO keeps you on page one without paying for every click.

02 · Strategy

Use Google Ads to catch people ready to buy

Someone searching “switchboard upgrade Logan” or “physio open Saturday” isn’t browsing. They want it sorted. Google Ads puts you at the top of that search right when the intent is highest.

The trick is keeping it tight. Bid on the jobs you want, in the areas you service, during the hours you can answer. Add negative keywords so you’re not paying for “DIY” or “jobs” searches. Use call extensions so people can ring you straight from the ad. A smaller, focused campaign usually beats a big, messy one.

03 · Strategy

Use Meta ads to stay front of mind

Google catches people when they need you. Meta keeps you in their head before they do. Nobody plans to need a concreter until they decide to redo the driveway. When that day comes, you want your name to be the one they already recognise.

Facebook and Instagram ads let you show up in a local area with short videos of your team, before-and-after jobs and simple offers. They also work well for clinics and studios running intro sessions or new client specials. Retarget people who visited your site but didn’t book, and you’ll pick up enquiries you would have lost.

04 · Strategy

Build a website that gets calls, not compliments

A pretty website that doesn’t produce enquiries is an expensive brochure. Most of your visitors are on their phone, often in a hurry. Make it easy for them to act.

  • A tap-to-call button that’s always visible on mobile.
  • A short quote or booking form. Ask only what you need to get back to them.
  • Clear service pages that say what you do, where you do it and what happens next.
  • Fast load times. Every extra second gives them a reason to hit back.

If your ads are working but enquiries aren’t coming through, the website is usually the first place to look.

05 · Strategy

Win on speed to lead

This one costs nothing and it’s where a lot of jobs are lost. When someone requests a quote, they’ve usually sent the same request to two or three other businesses. The first one to reply properly is often the one who gets the work.

Set up instant notifications so enquiries hit your phone, not just an inbox nobody checks. Send an automatic text or email straight away so the customer knows you’ve got it. Then follow up personally as soon as you can. If you’re on the tools all day, decide who owns enquiries and when they get answered. A great ad campaign can’t fix a slow reply.

06 · Strategy

Make reviews part of every job

Reviews are how a stranger decides whether to let you into their home or onto their treatment table. They also help your Google Business Profile rank. Yet most businesses only get them by accident.

Build the ask into your process. When a job is finished or a patient leaves happy, send a short message with a direct review link. Make it one tap. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and helpful way. Future customers read your replies as closely as the reviews themselves.

07 · Strategy

Show your real crew and your real work

Stock photos of smiling models in clean hard hats fool nobody. People want to see who’s turning up. Your team, your ute, your clinic, your finished jobs. Real content builds trust before the first phone call.

That’s why we run Shoots by Digi. A single shoot day can give you photos, video, drone footage and reels to use across your website, ads and socials for months. For a landscaper, drone shots of a finished backyard do the selling. For a physio, a short clip of the team explaining a first visit takes the nerves out of booking. 08 · Strategy

Turn happy customers into referrals and proof

Word of mouth is still one of the strongest channels a service business has. The difference is that now it happens online as much as over the back fence.

  • Ask happy customers if they know anyone who needs the same work done.
  • Share finished jobs and client wins on social media, with permission.
  • Build relationships with businesses that send you work, like builders, real estate agents or GPs.
  • Put your best reviews and project photos where people make decisions: service pages and ads.

For clinics, referral partners and patient stories are especially powerful. We cover this more on our allied health marketing page.

09 · Strategy

Get ready for AI search

More people are asking ChatGPT and other AI tools things like “who’s a good electrician in Ipswich” or “best chiro near me for back pain”. Those tools pull from what’s written about you across the web: your website, your reviews, your business listings.

The basics help here too. Clear service pages, consistent business details everywhere, plenty of genuine reviews and helpful content that answers real questions. On top of that, ChatGPT ads are opening a new way to show up in those conversations. It’s early, which is exactly why it’s worth testing now while fewer competitors are there.

10 · Strategy

Track every call, quote and booking back to the ad

If you can’t see where your jobs come from, you’re guessing with your budget. Clicks and likes are nice, but they don’t pay wages. Calls, quotes and bookings do.

Set up call tracking so you know which campaign made the phone ring. Track form submissions and online bookings as conversions. Then compare that against the jobs you actually won. Once you can see that one campaign brings in quality work and another brings in tyre kickers, you can move money to what’s working. This is the heart of how we run paid advertising for service businesses.

Follow the lead

02Call or formTracked number or form tagged to the source.
03Quote or bookingLogged against that lead.
04Job wonNow you know what to spend more on.
Where to start

Start with the leaks.

You don’t need to do all ten at once. Start with the things that stop leads leaking out, then add the things that bring more in.

  • First: fix your Google Business Profile, make your website easy to call from, and tighten up how fast you reply.
  • Next: set up tracking so you know what’s working, and start asking every happy customer for a review.
  • Then: run Google Ads for your highest-value jobs, add Meta ads to stay front of mind, and get real content shot so your ads look like you.

A simple, well-run setup beats a complicated one that nobody has time to manage.
