Does Your Google Business Profile Really Matter?

11 Oct 2026 | By: Aaron Briggs

If you’re a local business, there’s a free tool that might be bringing you more enquiries than your website. And most businesses ignore it.

We’re talking about your Google Business Profile: the box that shows up with your hours, reviews and photos when someone searches for you, or for what you do nearby. Here’s why it matters and how to get it working.

What is a Google Business Profile?

It’s your free listing on Google Search and Maps, showing your hours, location, photos, reviews and contact details.

When someone searches “gym near me” or “physio Brisbane”, the map results with business profiles often appear before anything else. That’s prime real estate.

Why does it matter so much for local businesses?

Because for local searches, the map results sit at the top, and that’s where many people decide who to call.

People can call, get directions or book straight from your profile without ever visiting your website. If your profile is incomplete or out of date, they’ll pick someone else.

It’s free, it’s often ignored, and it might be your best source of enquiries. The Digi playbook

What should we update first?

The right category, accurate hours and details, real photos and a short, clear description of what you do.

Then keep it alive. Post updates, add fresh photos and keep your hours current, especially around public holidays.

How do reviews affect our profile?

Reviews are one of the biggest factors in whether you show up and whether people choose you.

More recent, genuine reviews help. So do your replies. A business that responds thoughtfully to every review looks like one that cares.
